NY1535780ASSISTANT WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATORFull time for the Herkimer County Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Plant. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine but important work involvingresponsibility for the efficient operation and maintenance of a Type 3A Wastewater Treatment Plant withfacilities for the activated sludge process (including all modifications). The work is performed undergeneral supervision of an operator qualified to be in charge of the operation of the plant. Supervisionmay be exercised over subordinate employees in the performance of their assigned duties. The incumbentdoes related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:- Starts and stops pumps, motors, air compressors and related machinery and equipment;- Makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment;- Records readings from meters and gauges;- Treats and disposes of sludge;- Monitors the addition of chlorine to wastewater;- Takes samples of wastewater for testing and performs routine testing;- Makes necessary tests for control of plant operation;- Aids in the instruction of trainees;- Supervises the work of seasonal or other subordinate employees;- Keeps a log of plant operations and related records;- Performs maintenance and cleaning duties in connection with maintenance of buildings and grounds;- Operates motor vehicles such as dump trucks, lawn tractors and may be required to obtain a commercialdriver's license.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of aType 3A Wastewater Treatment Plant with facilities for the activated sludge process (including allmodifications); working knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry andbacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; skill in the operation and repair of pumps,valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to read, understand and record data fromgauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Type 3A Plant whose designated capacity exceeds 1.5 million gallons per day:Graduation from high school or possession of a New York Sate high school equivalency diploma.Although not required, possession of a Type A certificate issued by the New York State Department ofEnvironmental Conservation is highly desirable.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at time of appointment.TO APPLY: Download an application from the Herkimer County website at or pick up an application at the Herkimer County Sewer District Plant Office at 106 W.
