Job Description
Under the direction of the Utilities Supervisor, work to maintain and operate the Borough's water and wastewater facilities. In this position employees are expected to work towards attaining AKDEC Level 1 certification in 4 disciplines of water and wastewater. Weekend and shift work may be required.
Examples of Duties
Perform tasks involving maintenance activities related to water and wastewater facilities.
Maintain logs on all equipment related to water and wastewater facilities. Perform record keeping calculations.
Respond to emergency calls relating to water and wastewater facility maintenance and operations.
Learns science and rationale behind routine sample collection and testing.
Learns how test results are used to monitor compliance with permits.
Use various hand and power tools when required to perform a task.
Operated forklifts, loaders, backhoes, flatbed trucks, utility trucks, vactor truck, and similar motorized equipment.
Assist in maintaining water and wastewater facilities including but not limited to collecting samples for laboratory work, cleaning and repairing equipment.
Participate in sewer collection system maintenance, and in clean-up after wastewater system failures.
Promotes positive public relations, responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provide information within scope of knowledge or refers to supervisor.
Performs all tasks in accordance with sound safety practices.
Reads department manuals, procedure manuals, equipment manuals, and other manuals to become familiar with equipment, tools, processes and procedures.
Performs ongoing continuing education necessary to maintain all received certifications and licenses.
Qualifications
Ability and desire to learn through training, including classroom and self-directed training, and on-line and in-person testing.
Ability to work with little supervision, be self-motivated, manage time effectively and solve problems successfully.
Ability to develop and maintain productive relationship with public, supervisor and co-workers.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
Licenses:
State of Alaska CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with B endorsement.
Within thirty (30) days of employment, employee will be offered Hepatitis vaccine series. Employees declining vaccinations will be required to sign a waiver.
The following must be current or obtained within 6 months of employment:
CPR or BLS card
First Aid Certification
Any two certifications in any of the following four disciplines must be current or obtained within 1 year of employment:
AKDEC Level I Water Treatment
AKDEC Level 1 Water Distribution
AKDEC Level 1 Wastewater Treatment
AKDEC Level 1 Wastewater Collection
Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing on stools and ladders, and routinely lift and carry items and boxes up to seventy (70) pounds.
Frequent outdoor work and exposure to inclement weather and rigorous conditions. Crawling, bending, stooping in confined areas. Clearing brush, trees and debris from dams and spillways. Lifting, holding, carrying and using various tools and equipment. Administer CPR and first aid as needed.

Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued at a rate of 176 hours or 22 days per year for the first two years and thereafter at higher levels set out in the Borough Code (KGBC 3.30.030).
