What We Offer

New hires are typically brought into the organization between $22.50 $25.50/hour, based on experience and education. The City and County of Denver has announced furlough days, or unpaid days off, for most employees to meet a budget shortfall in 2025. There are two fixed furlough days for all limited (temporary positions with an end date) and unlimited (permanent) employees on August 29th, the Friday before Labor Day, and November 28th, the day after Thanksgiving. If you receive an offer for this position, your annual pay will determine whether you are required to take additional furlough days. Details will be discussed during the offer process for selected candidate(s).

Location & Schedule

This position is based at the Denver Wastewater Building, located at 2000 W. 3rd Ave., Denver, CO 80223. While youll report to this location each day, the work itself is performed entirely in the field. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

The Wastewater Construction team within DOTI is seeking a Utility Worker II. Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs semi-skilled and physically demanding labor on various construction, maintenance, and repair projects. Tasks involve physical exertion and the use of hand tools, power tools, and light motorized equipment. May also operate the compaction unit on city trash collection vehicles and wash trucks as needed.

  • Operates construction tools such as jackhammers, air spades, shovels, rotors, metal detectors, and air drills. Digs, excavates, shores, grades, and backfills trenches by hand.

  • Places and removes traffic control and safety devices (e.g., barricades, cones) around work areas in compliance with traffic regulations. Performs minor repairs on gardening and grounds equipment, vehicles, and machinery, including replacing broken parts.

  • Conducts pre-trip inspections on equipment, checking fluid levels, leaks, hoses, belts, tire pressure, brake lights, and other components. Secures, cleans, and maintains all tools and equipment used on the job.

  • Uses hand-operated construction equipment such as jackhammers, air spades, shovels, rotors, metal detectors, and air drills.

  • Performs seasonal duties, including salting, sanding, and manually removing ice and snow.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


What Youll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Previous experience with Construction, storm and sanitary repairs, and other labor-related task

  • Experience working in various weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, etc.) and environments (Sewage, asphalt, dust, fumes, etc.)

  • Knowledge of city of Denver streets

  • Desire to follow a career path and promote to other positions within the department, such as Equipment Operator I, Equipment Operator II, etc. (We provide on the job training!)


Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Education requirement: None

  • Experience Requirement: One (1) year of experience performing unskilled labor work.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

  • License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
