SUMMARY
The Town of Ocean City is looking for a Wastewater Plant Operator. This employee serves as an operator on an assigned shift in the wastewater treatment and outlying pumping stations and performs any combination of the following duties pertinent to controlling the operation of the treatment plant.
This position is considered essential personnel and must report even during storm events and other town emergencies.
Rotating shiftwork as required for plant operations.

The Wastewater Plant Operator:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to regulatory personnel, customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to perform required testing procedures necessary in the operation of the wastewater facility. Ability to operate any machinery and equipment utilized in operation of wastewater treatment processing. Required to pass a cardiopulmonary physical and meet the safety standards of the Town of Ocean City. Familiarity with computers and software used by the Town of Ocean City.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Wastewater Plant Operator:
- Supervises the operation of equipment throughout the treatment plant.
- Must maintain competency in all process areas and may rotate process area assignment and responsibilities.
- Supervises and maintains operation of pumps, valves, electric motors, chemical feed pumps (polymer, hypochlorite, bisulfite, magnesium hydroxide), clarifiers, sludge holding/thickening tanks, aeration basins, equalization tanks, oxygen generator, standby plant power generators, mechanical screens, rotary presses, sludge drying systems, dissolved air flotation units, disinfection equipment, and other relative wastewater process equipment.
- Makes visual inspections of wastewater through entire treatment process, includes Primary, Secondary, and Bio-solids processing.
- Reads meters and gauges and maintains records of readings; supervises or conducts required laboratory tests.
- Collects/compiles data used for preparation of regulatory and operational reports.
- Reports results to the Process Shift Leader or Process Supervisor.
- Serves as a first responder on calls for assistance with sewer calls and SSOs.
- Maintains continuing operation of plant under standby generator power during emergency power outages and utility provider load sharing.
- Has functional knowledge the appropriate use of lock-out/tag-out safety procedures, relevant occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.
- Maintains and operates the plant in a neat and satisfactory manner; participates in the cleaning, preventive maintenance, grounds keeping and painting as required.

- Must obtain a temporary Maryland State Class 5 Operator License within one year of date of hire
- Valid driver's license with less than four (4) points
- One year of wastewater treatment experience as a condition of employment
- Must obtain and maintain possession of a temporary Maryland State Class 5 Operator License
- Must actively pursue receiving a permanent license annually
- Valid driver's license with less than four (4) points
- Must possess of a permanent Maryland State Class 5 Operator License
