Back Remote - Safety Specialist Construction Western , MI Contract Hire Position Summary: Enscicon is currently hiring for a full-time Safety Specialist for an upcoming Power Generation project in Western Michigan. This will be a full-time position and will be working remotely to assist with the pre-planning stages of the project. There will be an opportunity to then support the project as the on-site Site Safety Manager during the outage. This will be a 5+ year long project. Project Pre-Planning: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Conduct comprehensive job hazard analyses (JHAs) or risk assessments specific to the overhaul, identifying hazards such as confined space entry (e.g., turbine runners, draft tubes, spiral cases), high-pressure water systems, electrical lockout/tagout (LOTO), falls from heights, heavy lifting/rigging, welding/grinding, and potential exposure to hazardous materials like oils or asbestos. Evaluate site-specific conditions, including dam/tailrace access, emergency shutdown procedures, and interactions with ongoing plant operations. Review historical incident data, equipment manuals, and past overhaul reports to anticipate unique risks (e.g., cavitation damage, structural integrity during disassembly). Safety Plan Development Develop or update the project-specific safety plan, including emergency response procedures, rescue plans for confined spaces, and protocols for dewatering/isolation of the turbine unit. Create or refine safe work procedures, permits (e.g., confined space, hot work, energized work), and pre-task planning worksheets. Integrate safety requirements into the overall project schedule, ensuring milestones like isolation, disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly include built-in safety controls. Regulatory Compliance and Permitting Ensure the plan complies with relevant standards (e.g., OSHA for general industry/construction, FERC dam safety guidelines, and any state or utility-specific requirements). Prepare documentation for regulatory submissions, safety audits, or client reviews related to the overhaul. Training and Competency Assurance Identify required training for all personnel (e.g., confined space entry and rescue, fall protection, LOTO, rigging/signaling, respiratory protection, hazardous energy control) and coordinate delivery before work begins. Develop or deliver toolbox talks and safety orientations tailored to the hydroelectric environment and specific overhaul tasks. Resource and Equipment Planning Specify and verify safety equipment needs (e.g., atmospheric monitors, harnesses/lifelines, ventilation systems, communication devices for confined spaces, personal flotation devices if working near water). Review contractor safety programs and qualifications if external teams are involved, and plan for safety oversight during execution. Coordination and Communication Participate in pre-planning meetings with project managers, engineers, maintenance teams, and contractors to integrate safety into design/execution plans (e.g., scaffolding, rigging plans, access/egress). Develop communication protocols, including stop-work authority, incident reporting, and daily safety briefings. Plan for ongoing monitoring, such as safety audits, inspections, and key performance indicators during the project. Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Safety or Construction Management preferred CSP or CHST certification preferred OSHA 500 or 501 preferred 5+ years of safety experience in industrial construction for power generation projects.
