Job Description The Transmission Line Engineer designs and analyzes overhead distribution and sub-transmission lines from 12kV to 69kV and higher voltages, ensuring compliance with all applicable standards, codes, and internal procedures. This role performs detailed engineering calculations, develops bills of materials, and supports all phases of line engineering projects from field data collection through design completion. The engineer works closely with a tight-knit project team, contributing strong analytical and problem-solving skills to deliver high-quality, cost-effective, and reliable power delivery solutions. Responsibilities
- Design overhead distribution and sub-transmission lines (1269kV) for line engineering projects in accordance with relevant standards, codes, and company procedures.
- Support transmission line design and engineering for higher voltages such as 138kV and above, including up to 500kV, as needed for power delivery projects.
- Perform detailed engineering calculations, including voltage drop, fusing coordination, transformer loading, and related power system analyses.
- Prepare and refine overall project cost estimates to support planning, budgeting, and decision-making.
- Develop accurate and detailed bills of materials for assigned projects to ensure correct procurement and construction support.
- Use PLS-CADD and related tools to perform transmission line design and modeling.
- Utilize Pole Foreman or similar software to complete pole loading and structural analysis for overhead line structures.
- Collect field data on poles, structures, and ground-based equipment to validate existing conditions and support accurate design.
- Review and interpret field data, drawings, and specifications to ensure design accuracy and constructability.
- Monitor and track project workflow, tasks, and milestones using Maximo or similar project tracking tools to keep projects on schedule.
- Collaborate closely with team members and other stakeholders to support project execution and maintain clear communication.
- Maintain organized project documentation, drawings, and reports to ensure traceability and quality control.
- Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve technical issues and optimize line design.
- Demonstrate a high level of attention to detail in all engineering work to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance.
- Contribute to a positive team culture by participating in collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement activities.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- 315 years of experience in transmission line design and/or transmission line engineering.
- Hands-on experience with transmission line design, including overhead lines for 1269kV and higher voltage levels such as 138kV and above.
- Proficiency with PLS-CADD for transmission line design and modeling.
- Experience with Pole Foreman or similar tools for pole loading and structural analysis.
- Strong understanding of power delivery and electric utility design practices.
- Knowledge of utility design standards and high-voltage transmission line engineering principles.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations such as voltage drop, fusing coordination, and transformer loading.
- Experience preparing project cost estimates and bills of materials.
- Proficiency with tools such as Maximo or similar systems for tracking project workflow and progress.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment and communicate clearly with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or a strong willingness to obtain licensure.
- Experience working with electric utilities and power delivery clients.
- Background in utility design for distribution, sub-transmission, and high-voltage transmission lines.
- Interest in leadership, mentoring, and building teams for long-term career growth.
- Familiarity with high-voltage levels such as 138kV and 500kV and associated design considerations.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Desire to work in a collaborative, tight-knit engineering team with a focus on quality and continuous improvement.
