Wastewater Operator Job Description The Wastewater Operator ensures safe, efficient, and compliant treatment of water and wastewater by operating, monitoring, and maintaining treatment equipment and processes. This role plays a critical part in protecting public health and the environment by following strict regulatory and safety standards while delivering consistent, high-quality treatment results. Responsibilities Operate equipment to purify and clarify water, process wastewater, and safely manage and dispose of sewage. Collect water and sewage samples according to established procedures and schedules. Conduct laboratory tests on water and sewage samples to assess quality and process performance. Document test results accurately and prepare reports for submission to regulatory agencies. Add chemicals as needed to disinfect water or other liquids in accordance with process requirements and safety guidelines. Monitor operating conditions, meters, and gauges to ensure systems function within specified parameters. Record meter and gauge readings and maintain detailed operational data and logs. Clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas to ensure reliable and safe operation. Follow all applicable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations and other relevant regulatory requirements. Meet and uphold facility safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe work practices. Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot operational issues and optimize treatment processes. Communicate clearly with colleagues and supervisors regarding system status, issues, and required actions. Essential Skills 3+ years of experience working with wastewater treatment processes. Hands-on experience with wastewater and water treatment operations. Ability to use computer programs for process control and monitoring. Strong communication skills to work effectively as part of a team. Keen attention to detail to ensure accurate monitoring, testing, and documentation. Excellent analytical skills to interpret test results and operational data. Strong mathematical skills to perform calculations related to dosing, flow, and process control. Ability to stand for extended periods while working both indoors and outdoors. Demonstrated ability to follow regulatory and safety procedures consistently. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with wastewater treatment systems in a regulated environment. Comfort working with computer-based monitoring and control systems. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a process-driven environment. Strong problem-solving skills for identifying and resolving operational issues. Work Environment The role follows a 4-day workweek schedule consisting of four 10-hour shifts from Monday through Thursday. The position requires the consistent use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, gloves, and protective clothing, to ensure safety in all work areas. Rotating shifts, weekend and holiday coverage, and after-hours call-outs may be required to support continuous operations and respond to urgent situations.
