General Utility Worker L1-2, Transmission Operations Underground Transmission, Extra High Voltage

The Transmission Operations Department is seeking General Utility Workers (GUW) to support field operations that ensure the safe and reliable operation of transmission systems. In this hands-on role, employees will assist with maintenance, construction, and repair of equipment while working in a team-oriented, safety-focused environment. Candidates should be dependable, adaptable, and willing to learn and grow within critical infrastructure operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Responsibilities
  • Work within manholes and other underground structures, as well as at high elevations, as needed
  • Work assigned shifts, which may include rotating schedules, weekends, holidays, and overtime, as needed to meet the operational needs of the department
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and/or electrical equipment
  • Operate motors and pumping equipment
  • Exercises safe work practices while adhering to environmental policies and procedures
  • Works in electrical enclosed spaces with diameter openings of 28 to 32 inches
  • Work in outdoor weather conditions, heavy traffic, on elevated platforms or areas, and are exposed to ambient noise
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills
  • Obtain emergency response certification, sheeting and shoring certification, and other certification as necessary
  • This position requires the operation of a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) weighing between 10,000 and 26,000 lbs
  • Comply with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including passing a DOT physical exam, maintaining a valid medical examiners certificate, and participating in random drug testing (including marijuana) before and during employment
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED
Relevant Work Experience
  • Experience handling piping equipment, including slings, shackles, and chain hoists
  • Experience performing standard maintenance functions such as measuring, pipe cutting, tubing bending, soldering, and handling cumbersome materials
  • Experience using hand and power tools
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and/or electrical equipment
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Pushing/pulling/lifting tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Walking/climbing/standing/bending extensively during the work shift
  • Wearing a safety harness
  • Working in an aerial device
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including tick repellent and fireretardant clothing, safety harnesses, hearing protection, fallarrest gear, safety boots, and a hard hat.
  • Working in electrical enclosed spaces having a diameter opening of 28 to 32 inches
