The Power & Utilities Manager is responsible for establishing the safety, quality, cost, reliability, and operating output of the mills Power & Utilities operations in alignment with the overall mill strategic plan. This role provides operational leadership for all power generation and utility assets and is responsible for day to day management of the departments supervisory staff.

This position has direct responsibility for power generation operations conducted under a joint venture structure, including ensuring compliance with the joint venture agreement, maintaining appropriate separation of business records, and managing ongoing relationships with the joint ventures Board of Directors and General Manager. The Power & Utilities Manager is expected to make operational and financial decisions that are compliant with joint venture governance while remaining favorable to and aligned with the interests of the Dublin Mill.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT SMURFIT WESTROCK

Business Excellence

  • Direct power generation and utility operations to ensure manufacturing standards are met or exceeded, leveraging assets including Power Boiler, Steam Turbine, Gas Turbine, Chemical Recovery, Electrical Generation, and Environmental Compliance systems.
  • Provide operational leadership for power generation activities executed through a joint venture, ensuring compliance with the joint venture agreement, governance requirements, and operating protocols.
  • Ensure appropriate separation of business records, financial data, and operational reporting between Smurfit Westrock and the joint venture, in accordance with contractual and governance requirements.
  • Serve as the primary operational liaison with the Joint Venture Board of Directors and the Joint Venture General Manager, supporting effective collaboration, transparency, and alignment.
  • Make operational, technical, and financial decisions that balance joint venture obligations while optimizing outcomes for the Dublin Mill.
  • Ensures compliance with joint venture governance requirements while maintaining clear accountability to Smurfit Westrocks operational and strategic objectives.
  • Formulate solutions to minimize lead time and maximize reliability, productivity, and cost efficiency.
  • Forecast financial requirements to support annual budgeting, capital planning, and variance analysis for power and utilities operations.
  • Provide technical expertise to resolve complex operational issues related to power generation and utilities.
  • Ensure timely, reliable delivery of utilities and energy required to support mill operations.
  • Ensure staffing levels are appropriate to meet workload, reliability, and safety requirements.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, safety excellence, and environmental stewardship.
  • Ensure best practices are followed by operations, maintenance teams, vendors, contractors, and visitors.
  • Direct engineering initiatives to address operational challenges and drive continuous process and asset improvement.
  • Proactively manage departmental metrics impacting cost and performance, including downtime, reliability, capacity, energy efficiency, and waste.

  • Lead, coach, and develop supervisory staff to drive accountability, engagement, and performance excellence.
  • Develop coaching plans to ensure timely and consistent feedback and conduct annual performance reviews.
  • Analyze root causes and resolve employee or operational issues effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Foster a collaborative, team oriented culture aligned with Smurfit Westrocks values.
  • Partner cross functionally with department leaders to support long term mill strategy and performance forecasting.
  • Ensure a safe work environment and compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Experience:

  • Required: 710 years of supervisory experience in pulp and paper or heavy industrial manufacturing.
  • Preferred: Power generation, chemical recovery, utilities operations, or integrated paper mill experience.

Education:

  • Required: High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Bachelors degree in engineering or a related technical field.
