Field Service Technician Job Description This role focuses on repairing, installing, and maintaining mechanical stamping presses at customer sites while providing high-quality technical support and customer service. You will travel frequently to perform on-site troubleshooting, machine installations, relocations, and inspections, and will also support machine building activities in the shop when not on the road. Responsibilities Repair and troubleshoot mechanical stamping presses at customer sites to ensure safe and reliable operation. Coordinate and perform machine installations, relocations, training sessions, inspections, preventive maintenance, modifications, and repairs. Coordinate and supervise customer personnel during installations, repairs, and maintenance activities when needed. Provide technical phone support to assist customers with troubleshooting and resolving issues remotely. Read and interpret CAD drawings of mechanical systems and understand electrical schematics to diagnose and correct problems. Repair simple hydraulic systems and follow basic computer control instruction manuals to support machine operation. Load simple commands into machine control systems and verify proper function. Troubleshoot simple AC and DC electric circuits using appropriate tools and test equipment. Manage and understand parts requirements, including identifying, organizing, and tracking components for service work. Prepare and deliver quotes for customer issues via phone, clearly explaining recommended work and associated costs. Gather all necessary materials, tools, and parts prior to traveling to job sites to ensure efficient completion of work. Operate overhead cranes and forklifts safely to move machinery and components during installations and repairs. Work as a machine builder in the shop when not traveling, assembling and testing equipment as needed. Travel to customer sites, diagnose and troubleshoot machinery issues, perform repairs or installations, and provide clear updates to customers throughout the process. Perform preventive maintenance tasks on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems to minimize downtime. Maintain accurate documentation of service work, including issues identified, repairs performed, parts used, and customer communications. Essential Skills Previous experience as a field service technician, with hands-on work on industrial machinery. Minimum of 5+ years of field service work, including service, assembly, diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, and installation. Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude, with the ability to diagnose and repair complex equipment. Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical stamping presses or similar industrial machinery. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical blueprints. Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics, and basic electronics in an industrial setting. Ability to troubleshoot simple AC and DC electric circuits using appropriate test equipment. Capability to repair simple hydraulic systems and follow basic computer control instruction manuals. Ability to understand and work from CAD drawings of mechanical systems. Skill in performing installations, relocations, and preventive maintenance on industrial equipment. Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and test equipment safely and effectively. Strong troubleshooting skills with a methodical approach to diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues. Ability to travel 80-90% of the time, often to different customer sites. Effective customer interaction skills, including clear communication and professional conduct on-site and over the phone. Capability to operate overhead cranes and forklifts (OH crane and FL) safely as part of installation and repair work. Comfort working both independently in the field and collaboratively in a shop environment. Ability to manage parts and materials, including identifying required components and organizing them for jobs. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience providing technical phone support for troubleshooting customer issues. Experience in machine building or assembly within a shop environment. Familiarity with loading simple commands into machine control systems. Experience performing inspections, maintenance, and modifications on mechanical presses or similar equipment. Ability to quote customer issues via phone, including basic estimating of labor and materials. Experience coordinating and supervising customer personnel during field service activities. Strong organizational skills for gathering and preparing materials prior to travel. Comfort working with preventive maintenance programs and documentation. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Chicago, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $70000.00 - $85000.00/yr. 401k - 70 cent match per dollar up to 8%.
