Job Summary: The Pipefitter/HVAC Technician ensures safe, reliable, and energy-efficient operation of HVAC and piping systems across all South Bend Community School Corporation buildings. Responsibilities include skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems, as well as proactive monitoring and troubleshooting to maintain comfort and indoor air quality. This role works closely with vendors, contractors, and other maintenance personnel, and may respond to urgent system failures or after-hours emergencies to ensure minimal disruption to school operations.

Basic Function: The Pipefitter/HVAC Technician will perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment across all district facilities. This role ensures the optimal performance of mechanical systems that are essential for the safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient operation of school buildings. The technician will work independently and as part of a team, responding to work orders, conducting preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting complex system issues. This position also supports district-wide capital and maintenance projects as needed, while maintaining clear communication with school administrators, staff, and vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair piping systems, HVAC equipment, and associated mechanical components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics to ensure correct system installation and repair.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on boilers, chillers, pumps, valves, air handlers, thermostats, and other HVAC systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues in mechanical and piping systems and perform necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Ensure all systems comply with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Respond to work orders and emergency maintenance calls in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each job.
  • Assist with project planning and execution for HVAC and piping-related components in capital improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with contractors and vendors during system upgrades and repairs.
  • Provide input on system upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, and equipment recommendations.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Follow all district safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent. A technical or trade school certification in HVAC, pipefitting, or a related field is preferred. A minimum of 5 years of experience in pipefitting and HVAC system maintenance and repair is required. A valid HVAC or Pipefitter license/certification is strongly preferred. The candidate should possess a solid understanding of HVAC controls, pneumatic systems, and building automation systems, along with familiarity with applicable safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations. The ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and blueprints is essential. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently are necessary for success in this role. A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required. The candidate must also demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Certifications: The ideal candidate should hold HVAC Certification, such as EPA Universal, NATE, or an equivalent certification. A Pipefitter Journeyman Certification or relevant licensure is preferred. Additionally, a valid driver's license is required for this position.

Working Conditions

  • Mental Demands: The Pipefitter HVAC Technician must be able to interpret complex diagrams and schematics and adhere to various regulatory requirements, including Building Codes, OSHA standards, and safety protocols.
  • Physical Demands: Must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, rooftops, and in various indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to lift 60 pounds without assistance and safely handle tools and equipment for extended periods.
  • Environmental Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, including maintenance areas, mechanical rooms, and district buildings. The position involves regular exposure to noise, dust, HVAC chemicals, refrigerants, and other potentially hazardous materials. Tasks may require working in confined spaces, at heights, or in areas with limited access. The technician must be able to lift heavy equipment, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods. Work may occur in varying temperatures, humidity levels, and weather conditions. The individual must be available for scheduled work hours as well as emergency repairs, sometimes during evenings or weekends. Proper safety equipment and procedures must be followed to ensure personal and workplace safety. Must be able to handle stress.
