The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Utility Worker I with the Wastewater Department. This position performs assigned work and assists in the daily operation of the collection system and/or treatment Plant. Performs cleaning and maintenance of facilities, collection systems, grounds, tools and equipment. Works under direct supervision of a Crew leader or Foreman.

  • Assists in performance of basic duties in the operation, maintenance and repair of the equipment used in the Wastewater Division.
  • Assists in performance of assigned duties in the Collection system pre-treatment, primary, and secondary treatment, UV disinfection and sludge treatment stages of operation.
  • Cleans equipment on a regular basis. Cleans lift station, pump stations, Treatment Plant and vehicles on a weekly basis.
  • Operates the biosolids equipment and combination unit, once trained on a regular basis.
  • Collects samples of the Treatment process at various operational stages and collect samples at industries, enter data in daily log, and/or computer.
  • Learn to monitor gauges, meters and control panels. Assists in the use of chemicals and learns to record and maintain logs on the use of chemicals and the amounts used.
  • Performs daily work using safe practices and procedures for equipment when working with chemicals and chemical hazards as set forth by law and proper storage of hazardous materials.
  • Follows safety practices and procedures in performing duties. Maintains personal protective equipment.
  • Assignment to rotating shift work and assigned on-call duties on a regular basis.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand and grasp the operation of mechanical equipment. Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, diagrams, policies, and procedures. Ability to work with people and follow instructions. Ability to obtain a Class I and II certification as a Wastewater Plant Operator or Collection Systems Operator. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License.

Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. One year of experience of work requiring a mechanical aptitude and performing mechanical tasks. Ability to obtain a Class I and II Wastewater or Collection Operators certification. Valid Driver's License required. Must obtain a Kansas Driver's License within 60 days of establishing residency and obtain CDL within 6 months of hire.

Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather and can be indoors and/or outdoors. Outdoor weather may include: snow, ice, hail, sleet, rain, fog, extreme heat and cold, high and gusting winds, sand and dust. Work may include confined space areas; i.e., ditches, trenches, man holes and lift stations. Indoor work is performed under controlled temperature conditions. Environment can include hydrogen sulfide, methane, toxic material, other hazardous gases, etc.

Surfaces: Outdoors, Asphalt, concrete, sand, gravel, grass and clay. Indoor surfaces: cement, tile, wood, metal, carpeted.

Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift up to 100lbs., pull, push, stoop, squat, climb, carry, balance, twist, jump, drive, sit, stand, walk, listen, hear, see, grip, hold, kneel, operate equipment, write, sweep and paint.
