The successful candidate will perform technical duties associated with the operation and maintenance of the City's water filtration and treatment plant and related facilities; help ensure compliance of the plant with regulatory agency requirements; collect laboratory samples and conduct a variety of tests to ensure City water quality; maintain water analysis records and data; monitor treatment processes; adjust controls; maintain equipment and facilities; and perform other work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the journey level class in the Water Treatment Plant Operator series. Incumbents perform the full range of journey level duties that are expected of a Water Treatment Plant Operator, working with greater independence and having more decision-making authority than incumbents at the Water Treatment Plant Operator I level.
The Water Treatment Plant Operator Il classification is distinguished from the higher level classification of Senior Water Treatment Plant Operator in that the latter works under direction and serves as a lead worker, directing and monitoring the work of subordinate Water Treatment Plant Operators and supervising the plant as needed in the absence of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Water Treatment Plant Operator II: Receives general supervision from the Lead Operator and Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Employees in this classification does not supervise subordinate staff. However, a Water Treatment Plant Operator II may indirectly supervise the work of a Water Treatment Plant Operator I, most often on a project or temporary basis.

Collect water samples; prepare reagents and conduct laboratory tests, e.g., pH, chlorine residual, settle-able solids, suspended solids, color, etc.; evaluate test data and recommend or make process adjustments to ensure water quality standards are met; maintain lab equipment to ensure reliability for use in conducting necessary tests.
Assist with the operation of the Supervisory Command and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system; maintain required records on water flows as well as other treatment plant operation and maintenance activities; maintain computer databases, operations and records for use in system process control; maintain records and reports consistent with local, County, State and federal requirements.
Inspect and maintain plant facilities and equipment to ensure proper working condition and cleanliness; assist in monitoring the hydroelectric generator function within the City's Electric Utility Department and adjust flows as required.
Inspect and test equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, generators, gauges, compressors, storage devices, etc.; perform preventive maintenance and routine modifications and repairs on plant equipment, buildings, and grounds; assist with major maintenance and coordinates associated efforts with other work groups and contractors; troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems as they arise.
Able to report to work within required 40-minute response time; fill in on operators shift vacancy and on call duty; respond, with supervisor approval, to plant and off-site facility alarms or call-outs as needed to ensure continuous operation and regulatory compliance; respond to emergency calls, including after-hours response within required timeframe with supervisor approval; position may involve working overtime and on weekends as needed.

Assist in the training of new personnel.
Perform other work as assigned.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Completion of 60 semester (or equivalent quarter) units from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in water/wastewater technology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, engineering, or a related field
Experience:
1) Water Treatment Plant Operator II: A minimum of two (2) years of experience at a level comparable to Water Treatment Plant Operator I is required.
Substitution: Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job proficiently may substitute for the above requirements.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience in a level III municipal water treatment plant is desirable; possession of a Class III Water Treatment Operator certificate is desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
License: Depending upon the position assignment, possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, an Oregon driver license by the time of appointment may be required.
WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR II
Certificate: Must possess a level 2 Water treatment License from OHA at time of appointment and a Pesticide license with Aquatic category issued by ODA within 6 months of appointment.
